About the event
A series of short films from POV.
BY WAY OF CANARSIE
A portrait of an oft-neglected community imagining possible futures at odds with the present. Using various formats, these vignettes explore Canarsie’s unique relationship to the water through recreation, brief encounters, and expressive use of analog film, granting an understanding of this predominantly Black neighborhood’s shared desires for recognition and respect. A film by Emily Packer and Lesley Steele and Shirin Ghaffary
FREEDOM SWIMMER
The story of a grandfather’s perilous swim from China to Hong Kong that parallels his granddaughter’s own quest for a new freedom. A film by Olivia Martin-McGuire and Brooke Silcox and Ron Dyens
FRESHWATERDetroiters experienced an enhanced form of water destruction from massive flooding that destroyed homes, belongings and lives in the summer of 2021. The water rose in streets, alleys, yards and, most devastatingly, in people’s homes, where it submerged possessions and memories, and surfaced emotions many were not prepared to confront. A film by by Dream Hampton and Ill Weaver
