This week, we take a look at freedom of the press in our country, rooted in the famous 1735 libel trial of John Peter Zenger. Based on the idea that freedom of the press is essential to the protection of liberty, the trial also popularized trial by jury and the right to legal counsel.
Of course, there have been numerous challenges to freedom of press since-famously NYT v. Sullivan and NYT v. United States, both case studies highlighted in communications coursework.
